I agreed to do this magazine cover if the publisher would agree to show our viewers how the picture was touched up. In fact, every picture in any magazine is touched up. There is no perfect woman or man. The woman who was on the cover of this magazine a few months before me had the video editor give her an electronic boob-job. Presto! A click of the mouse and she had perfect perky boobs.
Every subject of every glossy magazine is air-brushed and touched-up. The same is true now in television. With High definition television the "talent" is air-brushed just like a play-boy-bunny. As for this photo, here's what they did to me.
After watching this, let's talk about women expected to meet impossible standards.
Desperately working to reach the unattainable can lead to eating disorders, depression and insecurity.
As we try to please everyone, we are in danger of losing our sense of self.
In my 20's, I looked at the magazines I bought and decided that they were harmful and crazy-making. Here's how to make a great chocolate cake and lose 10 pounds. How to please your man. Be a perfect homemaker. Change your personality.
There weren't women's magazines at that time that celebrated and honored women as we are. I stopped buying those magazines and have rarely bought one since. Have to say I feel a lot less neurotic without them.
