A story about America's homeless stunned many Americans and won several awards because it dispelled myths. Many people had assumed when a homeless person gives them a sob-story, the homeless person must want something in return. Most likely money. Wanting money did not surprise anyone, but their stories took my breath away. In all the cases, the reports of hardship that led them to the streets were true. Many times they were even understated, as in the case of the young girl in this story.
With homeless veterans, their stories proved over and over that coming home from a war does not mean you've won. The horrors of war provides a Pandora's box of bad memories that leads to life-long damage. For those who fought America's wars, the pain of killing never goes away and the memories carve deep fissures of disfunction for generations.
